Post-Operative Instructions for Dental Implant Surgery
Surgical Site Care:
- Do not rinse, spit, or touch the surgical area on the day of your procedure to avoid irritation.
Bleeding:
- Some bleeding or red saliva is normal for the first 24 hours.
- If bleeding persists, bite down on a gauze pad or moistened tea bag for 20 minutes.
- If bleeding continues excessively, contact our office for guidance.
Swelling:
- Swelling is common after surgery. To reduce swelling:
- Apply an ice pack near the surgical site for 20 minutes on, 10 minutes off during the first 48 hours.
- After 48 to 72 hours, you can use heat to help with recovery and improve blood flow.
Diet:
- Stay hydrated and eat soft foods or liquids on the day of surgery.
- Avoid hot foods and drinks.
- Resume your regular diet as soon as it feels comfortable.
Pain Management:
- For mild pain, use Ibuprofen or Tylenol as directed by your doctor.
- For severe pain, follow the instructions for any prescribed medication.
- Important: Do not take pain medications if you are allergic or advised against them. Avoid alcohol, driving, and operating machinery while on pain medications.
Antibiotics:
- If prescribed, take antibiotics as directed to reduce the risk of infection.
Oral Hygiene:
- Rinse gently with warm salt water (1/2 tsp salt in 1 cup warm water) 3-4 times a day, especially after meals.
- Brush gently around the surgical area and avoid vigorous brushing initially.
Physical Activity:
- Limit physical activity after surgery to avoid complications like swelling or bleeding.
- Rest and allow your body to recover.
Wearing Prosthetics:
- Check with your surgeon about when it’s safe to wear any partial dentures, retainers, or full dentures.
